CR 399 Traffic Calming

10 Portofino Drive on Pensacola Beach

The penny helped make one of the main corridors that Pensacola Beach residents and visitors use every day safer. Completed in November 2016, this project upgraded the crosswalk and added traffic calming features near the Portofino Condominium entrance, where CR 399 transitions from the Gulf Islands National Seashore into the heart of the resort area. Improvements included:

  • An ADA-compliant crosswalk with enhanced design features

  • Raised medians providing a pedestrian refuge area

  • Traffic calming features including pavement texturing and signage to slow traffic and increase driver awareness

The project makes a busy stretch of beach road safer for residents and pedestrians, and a significant portion of LOST revenue comes from visitors spending on the beach, meaning improvements like this are partly funded by the tourists who use them too.
